Improving the Look of Your Smile

3 Ways to Brighten Your Smile – Ameena Chimata, DMD – Brookfield Dental Associates – Springfield, VA

Obtaining a beautiful smile begins with good oral health, including disciplined home care and healthy habits that support an attractive smile. Additionally, dentists offer dedicated treatments to improve the look of a smile, covering imperfections. Here are three ways you can achieve the smile you deserve:

Change Food and Drink Habits

Our diets play a significant role in the appearance of our teeth. What we eat and drink contribute to tooth staining or the spread of plaque throughout the smile. Dark colored drinks such as coffee, soda, and tea stain teeth easily. One way to reduce staining is to drink these beverages through a straw, or you can lighten coffee and tea with creamer.

Sugary foods enable bacteria to grow spread more quickly, increasing the chance of tooth decay. Try to limit these foods in yours or your child’s diet, as they not only effect dental health, but also general health. After eating sugary foods, drink water or brush your teeth to keep bacterial growth under control, and to keep plaque from building up throughout the day. Drinking plenty of water offers many benefits to oral health, hydrating oral structures and maintaining healthy bacterial levels.

Brush and Floss Properly

Brushing and flossing are the foundations of good oral health and need to be included in your daily routine. Brush twice a day, for two minutes, and floss at least once. When brushing, rotate the toothbrush to a 45-degree angle, directing bristles toward the gums. This will remove stray food debris, plaque, and polish the enamel. It’s also key to find a toothpaste that matches your needs, one that matches your tooth sensitivity or need for additional whitening.

Flossing at the end of the day prevents bacterial growth overnight. Be sure to floss each tooth, and push the floss into the gums. Use a long piece of floss to make sure each tooth is cleaned with a new section, stopping the spread of debris. Combined with brushing, flossing supports healthy gums and reduces your chances of developing periodontitis.
